Eppure anche Israele apre ai negoziati con la Siria, la strategia non è soltanto francese. Phares strabuzza gli occhi, "davvero c'è qualcuno che pensa che ci siano dei negoziati tra Siria e Israele?", chiede, e poi continua: "Se ci fossero trattative in corso, Damasco tanto per cominciare avrebbe dovuto chiudere il suo confine e interrompere il flusso di armi a Hezbollah. Se ci fossero trattative in corso, Damasco avrebbe chiuso il quartier generale di Hamas che ospita tranquillamente sul suo territorio. La Siria farà mai qualcosa del genere? Improbabile. Tutte queste pseudoaperture sono una gran perdita di tempo". O, peggio ancora, sono un motivo di giubilo per l'asse irano-siriano e i suoi adepti a Gaza e in Libano.
Basta guardare che cosa è successo con lo scambio di prigionieri tra Hezbollah e Israele. "E' sempre bene che i corpi o i prigionieri siano restituiti" dice Phares "Ma non è questo il punto. Il punto è che non c'è stato uno scambio tra governi legittimamente eletti, bensì tra un governo e un gruppo terroristico. Così Hezbollah ha guadagnato un riconoscimento e una legittimazione. L'unica domanda veramente importante però è un'altra ancora: che cosa c'è dietro al timing scelto da Israele per accettare lo scambio con Hezbollah?". Il cambiamento al vertice della Casa Bianca spaventa Phares, che ha seguito con attenzione soprattutto Baraci Obama, i suoi balletti sulla questione israelo-palestinese e il viaggio in medio oriente con cui inaugurà il suo tour globale sempre a metà estate: "Il suo atteggiamento pre 11 settembre finirà per influenzare in modo definitivo la guerra al terrore".
